According to the National Geospatial Advisory Committee (NGAC), emerging technologies in five core areas of GIS and geospatial activity--data collection and generation, data analytics, infrastructure, access, and workforce--will gain tremendous importance over the next decade, especially for federal agencies and the broader geospatial community. These technologies will enable users to collect or process spatial and spatiotemporal data and introduce new data types as well as have major implications for data delivery and use. They will affect de facto standards with respect to real-time data generation, use, confidentiality, and privacy. Data analytics is another aspect GIS technologies will need to cover. This encompasses human-guided and autonomous machine learning systems alongside other tools or methods to support users in analyzing spatiotemporal data. When it comes to infrastructure, there is an increasing need for new frameworks to support data collection, processing, storage, and sharing, as well as the protection of the technology itself. The recent diffusion of technologies and data is being facilitated by enhancements in access. This is set to affect the people who can access new technologies and the way they interact with improved tools and protect sensitive information. Esri, the global market leader in geographic information system (GIS) software, location intelligence, and mapping, is at the forefront of these trends and helps customers unlock the full potential of data to improve operational and business results. The Redlands, CA-based company works with more than 350,000 organizations globally and in over 200,000 institutions across the Americas, Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
