"New and shiny" does not necessarily produce results. But 2022 in general is likely to be a year where boards, investors, customers, and other stakeholders ask: Where are the results?RPA is a results-oriented technology that intersects with those big IT pillars in various ways. It has been hyped plenty, and now it's entering a more mature phase in which IT leaders and their teams will be refocusing on use cases that actually work and produce outcomes.RPA is a solution focused on automating rule-based repetitive tasks in the back office, such as data manipulation or reporting. However, the rise of different customer-facing technologies enables RPA to lead end-to-end automation tasks. For example, an RPA bot can be integrated with a customer service chatbot to extract data directly from human speech or text and automate relevant tasks for the customer without needing any human intervention between the customer and bot.The rise in the number and cost of data breaches, ransomware, and cyber attacks has drawn more attention to cybersecurity technologies. RPA can be a major candidate to automate cybersecurity measures as it eliminates human intervention in privileged data processing, and can monitor and notify users of cyber attack threats. Nonetheless, RPA itself poses a cyber threat as it is prone to attacks and abuse of bot authorizations. Therefore, it is important to follow the best practices of RPA implementation to attain the best results and mitigate cyber threats. The global RPA industry has made huge advances in 2020-2021. 2022 might just prove to be the game-changer for RPA where it expands into newer terrains adds new capabilities. Automation will continue to cement its position as a must-have enterprise technology with RPA at its heart.Let us know your thoughts.Joe PhillipManaging Editoreditor@cioapplications.comJoe PhillipGraphics & ArtEditorial StaffBen JacksonDaniel HolmesEzra BenjaminCatalina JosephRose DcruzSenior WritersClara MathewLeah JaneRoyce D'SouzaAsher BlakeDisclaimer: *Some of the Insights are based on our interviews with CIOs and CXOs
